Mimpi Ratu Mahamaya

Meski Raja Suddhodana dan Ratu Maya sudah lama menikah, namun mereka masih belum mendapatkan keturunan. Suatu masa ketika Ratu Maya berusia 45 tahun, Ratu mengikuti perayaan Asadha yang berlangsung tujuh hari lamanya. Setelah perayaan selesai, Ratu kemudian mandi dengan air wangi dan setelah itu ia mengucapkan janji Uposatha. Selanjutnya ia pun pergi beristirahat di kamarnya.

Dalam tidurnya, Ratu Maya bermimpi bahwa ada empat orang Dewa Agung yang mengantarnya ke Gunung Himalaya, kemudian membawanya ke Pohon Sala di Lereng Manosilatala. Lalu para istri dari Dewa-dewa Agung tersebut memandikannya di Danau Anotta, menggosoknya dengan minyak wangi dan kemudian memakaikan pakaian para dewata pada Ratu Maya. Ratu kemudian diajak ke istana emas dan direbahkan di atas dipan yang mewah. Di tempat itulah seekor gajah putih dengan membawa sekuntum bunga teratai di belalainya memasuki kamar, kemudian mengelilingi dipan sebanyak tiga kali untuk selanjutnya memasuki perut Ratu Maya dari sebelah kanan. Setelah itu Ratu Maya terbangun dan tiba-tiba terjadilah sebuah gempa bumi yang singkat. Ratu Maya segera bergegas memberitahukan hal ini ke Raja Suddhodana.

Para Brahmana pun dipanggil untuk memberi petunjuk akan mimpi tersebut. Setelah menganalisa mimpi ini, para Brahmana meramalkan jika Ratu Maya akan mengandung seorang bayi laki-laki yang kelak bisa menjadi seorang Cakkavatti (Raja dari semua raja di dunia) atau seorang Buddha (seorang yang mencapai Pencerahan Sempurna). Dan memang tidak lama kemudian, Ratu Maya menyadari bahwa ia sedang hamil. Ratu pun dapat merasakan keberadaan sang bayi yang tumbuh makin besar di dalam rahimnya dalam posisi duduk bermeditasi dengan posisi muka menghadap ke depan
