Dulu beliau bernama Djamal Bakir penganut Muslim taat yang memiliki istri tercinta, kini berganti nama menjadi Bhikhu Khanthidharo Mahathera yang hidup selibat tanpa didampingi keluarga tersayang dengan menjalankan masa vassa kebhikhuan 24 tahun mengikuti jejak kehidupan sang Buddha.
Berulang tahun di saat perayaan hari suci Asadha merupakan kebahagiaan tersendiri bagi bhikhu Khantidharo Mahathera. Asadha merupakan awal berputar roda Buddha dharma dengan hadirnya sekitar 1250 para sahabat menjadi murid sang Buddha yang kelak menyebarkan ajaran mulia dari India ke seluruh penjuru dunia. “Ulang tahun tanpa disadari malah mengurangi umur satu tahun bukan memperpanjang umur. Usia terlalu panjang tapi kalau sakit-sakitan malah akan menyusahkan keluarga, teman. Sebenarnya tidak perlu berusia terlalu panjang tapi yang penting dalam kondisi sehat merupakan berkah Tuhan perlu disyukuri” ceramah bhikhu Khantidharo Mahathera, kepala vihara Dhammadipa Arama Batu Malang.
Perjuangan dan pengorbanan, kebahagiaan maupun penderitaan mewarnai kehidupan beliau yang datang silih berganti seperti perputaran roda pedati. Djamal Bakir lahir pada 17/7/1931 dari pasangan alm Bakir Setjodihardjo dan almh Sumini di desa Pakis lereng gunung Merbabu Magelang. Putra kelima dari 9 bersaudara dikenal mudah bersosialisasi dan pintar. Pada 1947 ayahanda meninggal dunia, untuk menyambung hidup ia mengambil ikatan dinas departemen P&K mengajar di sekolah swasta sampai lulus SMA Negeri Magelang. Pada 1952 keenjadi guru SMEP Medan, lalu 1954 kembali ke Jateng melanjutkan B1 setara D3 di solo sambil mengajar di sekolah SMP-SMA. Bertemulah dengan Sri Hartini sesama profesi guru TK dan pada 17 juli 1955 mempersuntingnya sebagai istri tercinta. Lanjut 1956 menjadi wakil kepala sekolah SMEA Negeri Gorontalo lalu terjadi PRRI/PERMESTA mengakibatkan 14 guru terbunuh lalu jadi kepala sekolah hingga 1961. Kemudian ke malang melanjutkan studi di FKIP (sekarang UNM) jurusan ekonomi lulus 1963 dengan gelar Drs Djamal Bakir sore bekerja sebagai guru SMEA Negeri Malang, paginya sebagai direktur bank umum Batu berkenalan dengan romo pandita Mujono.
Setelah mengenal ajaran Buddha Djamal menemui pandita Pannasiri (Alm Go Eng Djan), lalu mengajak Hartini untuk ikut membaca buku Buddha yang direspon positif oleh sang istri. Sejoli ini aktif kebaktian di vihara Dhammadipa Arama bertemu beberapa umat Budhis yang santun dan intelektual diantaranya Dr Gunawan (kini di Papua), Dr Widjayanti (kini di Madiun). Pada 1971 naik pangkat menjadi wakil kepala sekolah SMEA Negeri Malang dan menjadi ketua Perhimpunan Buddhis Indonesia (PERBUDHI) Malang berjuang bersama Herman S Endro (kini bhikhu Jayamedho).
Mulailah perjalanan memperdalam budha dharma. Menjadi bala anupandita dengan nama Dharmaniyana Djamal Bakir dan istrinya menjadi Dharmaniyani Sri Hartini. Lalu aktif menerbitkan buletin kursus tertulis pendidikan guru agama Budha dan majalah bulanan Pancaran Dharma 1970 hingga 1977. Djamal Bakir menjadi kepala sekolah Duta Taruna bagi WNI di Yangon Myanmar dan naik pangkat menjadi staf KBRI Myanmar. Pucuk dicinta ulam pun tiba, pada 1981 diupasampada sebagai Upajjhaya oleh Sayadaw Ashin Janakabhivamsa di Chanmiyay Yeiktha Meditation Center Yangon. Saat hari libur aktif berdana makanan pada YM Mahasi Sayadaw (Alm) sambil berlatih vipassana. Kemudian pada 1982 mengajak keluarga berziarah ke tanah suci India dan pulang ke tanah air. Ibu Sumini meninggal dunia. Pak Djamal bertugas menjadi Inspektorat Jendral departemen P & K selama 5 tahun berkeliling ke 27 propinsi di Indonesia. Agustus 1987 pensiun dari kedinasan pegawai negeri sipil P & K.
